Thought I would share how we spent that night; since we actually quite enjoyed it! The whole affair started with me going restless a couple of days ago, seeing that dearest husband has absolutely no intention to do anything special that night. He would be perfectly content sitting by the fire, sipping some wine and watching one of his favorite movies (we have a growing library of DVDs, most of them action movies or thrillers, with the occasional funny one thrown in for good measure).
Since I have seen the Bourne trilogy quite enough times already, I went hunting for someting else; and where do we go "hunting" nowadays for almost anything? yes, the Magic Box, the internet.
Now, I realize that dancing is about as likely to happen now as an unexpected trip to the Outer Space, I was just looking for a bar or restaurant or something. And, as luck would have it, the second place I called still had some free tables left,so we reserved one. It wouldn't do of course to just the two of us, we wanted to invite my colleague and friend, Erzsi, too; and since the deal they offered was for couples, we invited Bubu's grandpa, too. The old man is truly one of a kind and can tell stories from the Golden Age of Molecular Biology like no-one else. After a couple of glasses of wine we usually arrive to the point where the Days When You Had to Purify Your Own Enzymes! get recalled quite vividly. No, really, he is hilarious and a very lovable companion. Not to mention he really was there, when Science was still something noble, not just a livelyhood as it it now. (But that's a whole other story).
As it turns out, the restaurant was a tiny family owned place, but had a real cozy atmosphere and we loved to be there from the first moment we stepped in. They had tacky plastic flowers paired by artificial flickering candles, gaudy Happy New Year signs right by the LED illuminated plastic christmas tree, and somehow it still managed to be very homey. It is a latin restaurant, and I think it is going to be one of our favorites.
The deal was that you paid a set price, which included everything you could eat, plus a bottle of wine (anything from a long and very respectable list), plus a glass of champagne at midnight. So we took this deal very seriously and did our best to eat and drink through the whole menu. Judging by the shocked look of our waiter at the fourth round, we managed pretty well. (It's always nice to stuff yourself silly before you vow to start dieting on Jan. 1st, right?)
So we spend the evening eating, drinking, and sharing stories of old and new days, and before we knew it, it was midnight. Hello, 2010! We hope you will be as good to us as 2009 was.
